The storm didn't dump that much snow, maybe 4 inches but the wind was fierce. Mike checked on the horses around 9:00am. The herd in the middle paddock was no where in sight, they had gone into the woods and down a valley. In the new paddock he saw one of the colts, either Valiant or Evan standing with his back end in the shelter, his front end out of the shelter and didn't think anything of it. When he came back at 3:00pm to check on them. He saw the same colt standing in the same spot full of snow. The colt was stuck in the bale ring quietly waiting to be rescued. Mike said he just helped him pick up his back leg, the colt then ran over to the waterer to drink. Mike followed him over to check him out and saw that one of the horses had pulled the plug and the water was flowing into the field. He put the plug back and put a metal plate on top of the plug so that can't happen again. He wasn't able to tell us which colt but both Steven and I think it was probably Valiant. He moved in another bale into the middle paddock, checked the rest of the horses then called to report. Here at Bridlewood, Laura came to check on Autumn saw that she was not in the shelter, brought her in and knocked off the snow. She worked her a bit and was very pleased with how well she did inside when the wind made it sound like the barn was coming down on top of them. She put a blanket on her before taking her back out. Laura thinks Autumn would rather stand in the cold snow than be in the shelter alone. Perhaps we should bring in another horse as a companion for her.
The wind has now stopped but it is bitter cold. Mark has the snow tires on the car, there should be no problem making it up the farm drive this morning but... I don't know if I WANT to walk. Either way the horses need to be checked on and fed so it will be off to the farm for me.
