Shipping Semen
The call came while in the library paying for a lost book. Semen was needed tomorrow for a mare in Kansas. The owner of the mare was willing to leave tonight, drive during the night to personally pick up the semen and get it back to his vet in Kansas by tomorrow afternoon. The better way was to see if Dr. Hoerr would come here today, collect and ship it out before FedEx closed at 7:00pm. After 3 phone calls to the vet clinic and a text to Dr. Hoerr, the answer came back yes Dr. Hoerr would come tonight by 6:00pm. Diane came over to hold the jump mare while I handled Raven. Soon 6:00pm came and went, the call came at 6:08pm he was crossing the river on 474 and he pulled up at 6:25pm. Raven was ready but by the time the AV came out the water was just a bit too cool and Raven rejected it. That meant a trip into the apartment to empty the water out and refill it with 105 degree temperature water. Raven said yes to that and gave us about 75 ccs of very potent viable sperm. Dr. Hoerr was quick to test it, extend it, and get 2 doses in the equitaner ready for transport. After the extender was added there was still a full dose left which Dr. Hoerr took home to test in the morning and then for the next few days just to make sure the semen is still viable if the mare does not ovulate tomorrow like the Kansas vet thinks she will. Dr. Hoerr left here at 6:43 giving him 17 minutes to arrive before FedEx closes.
Horsemeister bought all of the equipment to collect and ship but we haven't taken the time to set anything up and I still want to take some classes on equine reproduction. Wouldn't it be wonderful if ICC offered classes like that?
Mom arrived with the garbage bill, it is our month to pay and Spark & Rhonda arrived to stop by and visit a bit on their evening walk. Mark stopped mowing to get Spark's opinion on a pump.
