Mother's Day in Quarantine

Lily would like to wish every mother, mother to be, or special aunt Happy Mother's Day. I'm in awe of how a mare cares for her offspring. She loves and protects the foal with everything in her. Lily was born May 4th, 2002 and survived EPM when she was 8 months old then colic surgery 10 years ago. She is a wonderful mother, our very best brood mare and we love her!
Speaking of Lily, this morning she is having a discharge where she shouldn't be. She must have retained some pieces of placenta. That meant we needed a vet out today. This is not a life or death quickly type of emergency but should be taken care of in hours not days. I waited until 7:00 am so as not to wake up Dr. Pallen and then just sent a text with information on why she would need to come out today. Lily and her colt were turned out and I went in to make breakfast and get ready for church. Since mom is home we met at her house again. Gregg Rumbold had the Mother's Day message and Ruth brought the lunch.  I stayed until a few minutes before 11:00 as Dr. Pallen arrived with her helper John at 11:00 am to treat Lily.  She was sedated, given a long lasting antibiotic called Exceed, given 10 cc's of Banimine and a couple cc's of oxytosin. Once she was sleepy Dr. Pallen scoped her not finding any infection pooled in her bladder. The uterus was next and there was infection mostly in the right horn.
John was pumping the iodine water up into the tube while Dr. Pallen held it in place in the uterus.
What came out was a lot of thick ugly infection.
This was done filling 4 of the metal buckets with warm iodine water and the emptying it into the green bucket which needed to be dumped twice. Dr. Pallen believes she will need to be done again tomorrow afternoon and left more banimine and sulfa which will be given tonight. Once they left I  headed back down to the house to start making supper. Tonight Rhoda, Stephanie, David, Israel, Elisabet, Zion and Eden came. After dinner we took a long golf cart ride but it is really windy and really cold. Rhoda brought her clippers and David brought Rizzy so Rhoda gave Rizzy a haircut.
As all the groomers have had to shut down their businesses because of the Covid 19 virus Rhoda bought her own clippers and has been grooming all the family dogs. This girl is multi talented.
We drove up to put Lily and her colt away before the apartment guests arrive and found her standing again in front of the front door of the apartment. Sure don't know why that foal picks that spot to take a nap but Lily won't leave him to graze until he wakes up.
The grandchildren were going to help me put her away but first decided to pick grass and feed them.

I thought it was cute how carefully Lily would take the grass from their hands.
The colt decided to try it also.

David, Israel and Elisabet are spending the night in the camper and will help tomorrow with the butchering. The rest of the company left for home. It was raining when our apartment guests arrived but the sun was peeking through enough to give us a rainbow. Another long but good day.
