My barn guests left at 8:30 am. I went right over to start the laundry while Mark was getting ready for the big concrete job we had planned for today. I got the sheets going in the washer then was getting ready to sweep when I saw a big wood roach under one of the tables. I can handle spiders and flies but any type of roach gives me the creeps. This one was a little suspicious as it was not moving. A closer look revealed that it is plastic.
I put it in my pocket and forgot all about it. At 9:00 am I took the rest of the graded Bible studies to the Hanna City post office, was talking to Rachel the postmistress when I reached into my pocket for my phone and the roach fell out. We both jumped. That was twice in less than an hour for me. I got home right before Dan arrived with our extension cords. The electrical problem was just a popped breaker so he had some extra time. He told us all about the crazy car chase man that ended up in Myrna's lake. Abram, Dan's son sent him a text reading. There are 25+ police cars at the farm. The guy is armed and stole a vehicle. The cops are there He's swimming in the lake!
Dan responded with, What are you talking about? CALL ME. Well last week someone knocked down the dead end sign on the road going to Myrna's farm and lake. The car thief thought he could drive down that country road and get away from the 25 police cars following him but when he got to the end there was no where to go but the lake. The police were on the scanner searching, one found the deer stand but there was nothing disturbed around it so they kept searching until one yelled, "he's IN the LAKE. They saw the rowboats, borrowed one and rowed out trying to talk him into getting out of the lake. That actually took longer than expected. From what Dan told me, he is Latino and maybe couldn't understand English. He may even be an illegal immigrant. Below is an aerial picture of Myrna's lake with the boats on the shore. Notice the road that ends. He dropped the car and ran into the lake. We found out later that the car he stole in Hanna City was stolen next to Justin's house. What a crazy story. As long as Dan was here we put him to work loading cement into the mixer.
Dan got a call and had to leave so I took over his job. Below are few pictures of the work in progress.
After finishing one pallet of cement bags we stopped to the first screeding of the concrete. We should have made sure the cement mixer was complete empty because when we started up with the next pallet the mixer wouldn't turn. We had to empty all of the cement out of the reservoir and take it apart. We found a pin that had sheared off and were able to replace that with a screw. We learned our lesson well as when the next pallet of bags were done we made sure the machine was empty.
Of the 4 pallets we had we went through 2 and a half which doesn't leave us enough bags of cement for the second side. We finished the first side around 3:00 pm. We started on the mixing of the cement around 9:30 and did not stop working until after 3:00 pm. Below is the last picture I took of that job before heading in for a shower.
I had so much cement dust covering me I was worried that during the shower the drain would back up and be filled with cement but thankfully that didn't happen. While Mark was cleaning up I was able to get the sheets out of the two dryers and make the beds in the barn. By the time Mark was done the towels from the barn were dry, folded and put away. By this time it was already after 4:00 pm and we were really hungry so drove to Gils Supper Club and tonight we splurged getting a cob salad to share and a full order of onion rings.
Both were delicious. Those onion rings were perfectly done and a delight to the pallet. The cob salad is Mark's favorite and I enjoy my share with those hot salty onion rings mixed in. The meal came with 2 pumpkin fritters. We ate it all. We got home in time for our next guests, a Native American family.Sarah and Nolan arrived with Zion, Eden and River. They were on their way to the Sauder's costume party. They stayed to visit for about 15 minutes but Zion was anxious to go so she could play with Jack, David and Leah's baby boy.
