Below is an email from Steven after his, Karin and Rachel's horse round up trip to Middle Grove.:
So Judy I forgot to tell you, I tried to convince Karin and Rachel, but I was the only smart one. I rode Bunni back to the trailers ponying Mika and Autumn. No way am I going to walk that long walk twice :). I was actually surprised to see that there were a few dry spots in the middle paddock today. hopefully it keeps drying up. Autumn seemed good too. I got worried driving back thinking she might start calling for her baby again but she didn't. By the way, it was soooo cool seeing 4 sets of moms and foals out there. It was funny though because velvet's colt stayed with big sally a lot of the time and velvet didn't seem to notice much.
Steven
For the readers information Velvet's colt and Big Sally's filly have been paddock mates almost from birth, they are best friends. It is not unusual for foals to stay together with either mom. When they want to nurse they leave the babysitter and find their own mom. In a wild herd this happens a lot, where one mare will keep watch over a few foals giving the other mares time to relax and graze. We really appreciate that our mares have the opportunity to bring up their babies in a herd on a beautiful piece of land, 80 acres open with beautiful hills and valleys just made for a good run, lots of lushes green grasses, big shady trees for nap taking and lounging around under, cool clear running creeks for refreshing long drinks and ponds to swim in. It really is a horse paradise!
