Field Trip Time

Jan Stickling brought her entire class out for a field trip today. It was suppose to be last Monday but the weather report was bad. The weather wasn't too good today but they all seemed to enjoy the visit anyway. They pulled up in the rain and parked in the indoor arena to keep from getting soaked as they unloaded. From there we headed over to the stalls to visit the foals. Below Becca is showing the class Eliza's colt.
He loves visitors and is very brave come to the door to meet the group. He truly enjoys the children.
Next we went across the aisle to meet Emma. The Emma who still hasn't had her foal. The class was shown how big and tight her udder is and the waxing. We talked about why we wrap a mare's tail and what signs we look for. They were shown the monitor and foaling camera.
They were suppose to eat at the playground on the picnic tables but with the rain it just made sense to get sheets and have a picnic on the floor.
After lunch who ever wanted to got to hand feed Killian grain. They were given plenty of time to wear off some of the energy by playing on the bales.
After we said goodby to the group and the rain stopped it was time to give both Eliza and Zalena along with their foals some turnout. They were taken to the cabin field to spend some time with Sheena, Sangria and their 2 sons. Eliza's colt did just fine, he had a ball galloping around acting like he is the king even though he is the youngest foal only 3 days old.  Sangria's colt at 8 days is the oldest so there is only 5 days separating these 4 babies.  After that I went in to get a nap. Becca kept an eye on Emma and by the time her mom picked her up had fed and watered the horses and cleaned stalls. A big THANK YOU to Becca. After supper the foals were checked on. I ended up bringing Zalena and her filly back to the stalls, she slid and went right down in a mud puddle. She was taken into the stall and given a bath with warm water then dried off well. They will spend the night inside tonight and I'll try again tomorrow. There is just so much mud right now even in the cabin field. We got 2 and a half inches of rain over the last 4 days. Sheena is now in her foal heat. I had to bring her colt over for a few pictures for someone interested in purchasing him.

It's kind of funny, she is worried about him being over at the knees. I think she doesn't understand foals at all. These weren't good enough, she wants me to take more tomorrow and probably the next day and the next day.
Oksana is still showing but the ground is so slippery Evan was having trouble. Mike was called in to assist with this cover. I'm going to have to dump a load of gravel at the breeding stand. Mark helped move 2 new bales in and flip a bale for the stalled horses. Jurista and Soul were moved into the pond pasture with Ribbon. Jurista went right over and started to show to Evan. We are trying to get the 3 Andalusian mares cycling together for when we have the semen shipped in from Michigan. Mark mowed tonight as the sun was setting finishing at dark. The sun was behind a cloud bank but lighting up the cotton candy clouds this evening. The fields are now ready to cut and bale but the ground is too wet and the weather pattern to unpredictable.  We could hear Joan mowing before Mark started and after he quit. This sure is great growing weather.
