Locked Doors

Pleasant Home is just blocks away from the South-end of Peoria and all the years I lived there we didn't lock the doors. We couldn't lock the doors, first of all there didn't seem to be locks around and then if there were with 11 kids the keys would be lost. We were blocks away from a serial killer that buried his victims in his garden (by the way he always had a beautiful garden). We would hear gun shots regularly and still we never felt the need for locks.
Last night around 11:00pm some very scary sounds were coming from outside. So scary the dogs were on alert with their hair standing straight up. Emma was running first to the front door and then to the back door. I got up and LOCKED both doors. What ever was out there, we sure didn't want it coming IN! We know there are cougars out here, Spark has a picture of one in his yard, we can hear coyotes nearly every night but this didn't sound like either one of those things. This sounded like a bear, at least the snuffling and grunting but when the weird screeching started that was enough and it was time to be locked in with 2 scared dogs and a sleeping husband. Actually even Mark got up and asked, "WHAT WAS THAT?" So living way out here in the country isn't as quiet as was reported to be. Yes we have no sirens screaming all night long we rarely hear car or truck sounds. We still have gun shots every once in a while when David Sauder is going after snapping turtles or Mike after opossums, but the animal sounds out here are enough to make us get out of bed and lock the doors.
Today I'm heading in to work to use the new copier needing to make thousands (really only hundreds it just seems like thousands) of copies of each of the studies, finishing up the letters and getting the Bibles UPSd out to the chaplains waiting along with the individual. The change must be collected from the apartment laundry machines and deposited and then in the afternoon head to Middle Grove to pick up Lily and DaMita for ultrasounds. We also need to move in 4 round bales this afternoon. Steven Marchal left a message he was coming to work the boys, hopefully he will help with these jobs.

  1. Foxes are surprisingly loud. Google 'fox calls' and you can find samples of their various barks, calls and shreeks. We have one (or many?) in our area and it keeps me up (and our dogs!) many a night!
