On the walk this morning mom noticed Rhonda's lilacs and stole a bouquet. She thought Rhonda wouldn't notice but we will make sure Rhonda knows.
Mark helped hook the trailer up and load Lily and her filly now named Helen (for Helen Keller) and I left for UofI around 8:40am picking up Amy Koch in Morton, IL at 9:00am. We arrived with high hopes the filly's eyes would be able to be operated on and fixed.
We were a bit early and had to wait until the ophthalmologists were ready for us.
The students came to help us take them off the trailer and into the hospital where the first job was to weigh the baby. She weighed in at 225 pounds, not bad for a 3 week old filly. Then came the exam.
She was very good standing quietly while the many students all got a chance to look into her eyes. We were hopeful until the report came back there is nothing to be done. The Ophthalmologist even checked Lily out thoroughly and told me there was no way this was inheritable. This happened during the development of the eyes in the first few months of gestation. It is a rare thing but sometimes happens. He gave us a prescription to be filled tomorrow for her eyes just in case there is any inflammation, this will keep her comfortable and told me we have some decisions to make. We can have her put down, wait until she is ready to be weaned and try to find a companion for her or bring her back in 4 months to see if there is any change. We paid the $168.00 bill and headed for home with lots to pray about. We stopped in Goodfield, IL at the Busy Korner for lunch around 2:10pm, the special was ham loaf and Amy wanted to order that. When the waitress arrived she let us know, unless one arrives by 12:30pm for the lunch special there is no chance of getting that. Amy ordered the Asian chicken salad while I ordered the liver and onions.
Haven't had that since Lums closed down. Both were really good with huge portions. We each ate about a 4th and asked for boxes to take the rest home to the husbands. Of course we had to try the home made pie.
Amy ordered rhubarb while I ordered the peanut butter chocolate.
Each of us only ate half and asked for more boxes. Best part about today was not having to cook dinner tonight. Worst part is the removal of hope. Still all is in God's hand and everything works together for good. So something good will come out of this, we don't know the end of the story.
Steven was here when I arrived and moved mares to get a secure paddock with a shelter for Lily. Once they were all situated Ella was brought over and covered by Evan. He was very well behaved today and the job was accomplished quickly. Zalena was checked today is 18 days and we thought she may be coming into season but she was not interested in either of the boys or Raven. We have Dr. Hoerr coming out to ultrasound her on Thursday morning. Izadora needs to be here then, she needs to have a new coggins as it looks like she is sold and will be going to North Carolina. The check hasn't yet come and we won't mark her sold until that comes but it sounds like it should be here soon. The people buying Bow called and want to pick her up on Friday.
So is the horse completely blind now, or will go blind in time? I am so sorry about that.
