Grueling Hikes

Yesterday the 10 hiking up to the base camp of the mountain loaded up and left at 5:00 am. The rest of our group needed to be on the bus at 8:30 am for our 2.5 hour trip up another mountain to a waterfall. Our hike was supposed to be rated for those 99 years old and younger. Not so. It was actually quite hard. And when we reached the waterfall found the rocks too sharp and the water extremely cold. We got wet to cool down but no swimming. The hike had beautiful views and the waterfall was truly beautiful with the water cascading over a thousand feet down into a rocky pool. The hike back up was strenuous. Thankfully men with motorcycles could rescue those that needed help but even those couldn't get close to the falls. It was still a hard hike to get to where one could be picked up. Diane and I hiked the entire trip but many others were glad for the ride. When we all reached the village around 4:00 pm we were served one of the best lunches of the entire trip. That may have been because breakfast was 9 hours earlier. Hunger is the best cook. The food was prepared by the village cooks. After lunch we had a presentation of the coffee beans that grow here from the flower to the bean and then all the way to the coffee grounds. Each that wanted to could help with each step that ended with each that wanted a cup of delicious coffee. They were glad to sell us either the perpared roasted beans or the freshly ground to take home. We made it to our last hotel by 8:00 pm where a buffet supper was served on the roof top for our group. The Killamanjaro hikers returned almost the same time as the waterfall hikers exhausted and sore. It was a difficult hike through the rain forest to the base camp. Joan and Sarah were both able to make it up and back. They saw monkeys but no view as the base camp had cloud cover. There is internet at this hotel down in the lobby but not very good internet in our rooms. I was able to talk to Mark for a few minutes but not able to post pictures from yesterday.  Today we leave for the airport for our 24 hour trip home so no more posts will be written until we make it home. Praying for safe travels.
