A FILLY

Madiera had a dark bay filly at 2:17 am! It was a red bag birth and I did not attend. I woke up at 2:19 am to check the monitor and the filly was already born. I went back to watch the video and was shocked to see first the bag then once the filly came Madiera, who had really had a hard time with this birth just lay there and didn't move to clean the sack off of the filly. She struggled for what seemed like a long time but was no more than a minute to get the sack off of her face so she could breath. It also took her about an hour to stand and for sure she didn't nurse for at least 2 hours. She has nursed off and on since 4:30 am. At 6:00 am I went out to remove Missy, clean her stall, put the filly and Madiera in the clean stall so their stall could be stripped and new bedding put down. They were moved back over and pictures taken.

I will need to make sure she does not lose the ability to nurse as with red bag births the foal is deprived of oxygen and the brain can swell. If that happens she will be considered a dummy foal. Praying all will be well.
