It was a welcome change to wake up this morning to above ZERO temperatures. The outdoor thermometer is reading 16 degrees at 6:30am so we are thrilled for the warm up. I am especially pleased, today the hose must be dragged out of the basement and the tank filled. It is much easier filling water tanks when the weather co-operates. Unfortunately the wind is blowing so even with above zero temps it is COLD. Sanna saw me at the door and started calling. She is looking for her filly but is not so worried that she will turn down the grain. One very nice thing is that Classy has been put in his place. He was quite the boss with the fillies. Sanna and Anni don't give him the time of day. He was very quickly moved from the king of the hill to lowest on the totem pole. He went straight for his bucket and was shocked when Anni claimed it. She put her ears back and he very respectfully moved over to the next bucket, Sanna decided she wanted that one, put her ears back and off he moved to the third bucket. He kept longingly looking at the first bucket, would take a few steps toward it, Anni would lift her leg and he would turn around and head back for the far bucket. I put extra grain in the far bucket knowing he would end up with it. Horses that have been brought up in a herd usually do not need to kick and fight to find their place. They are educated from little up. One interesting note is that the foal of a dominate mare, once weaned tries to dominate an older horse and usually is shocked then to find they won't back down. We have a great herd for educating the young horses.
On another note, we are dropping the price on Izadora's colt by $500.00 If he is reserved BEFORE weaning in Feb we will sell him for $4000.00. Not because he is worth less, we really just plain have TOO many horses. He is very sweet, Becky was shocked at how good he was once we told her how he hadn't been handled much. We have been grumbling about the weather and Amy sent me this email about a beautiful winter poem, I just had to post it.:
I found this beautiful winter poem and thought it might be a comfort to you.It was sent to me and it's very well written and I hope that you enjoy it too.
