Weaning Day for Two

We had such a cool refreshing day, the heat and humidity is gone!  The morning was spent doing the last few things for the apartment to get ready for the guests coming in today. Then the barn cleaned up and the yard mowed.  Karin came later and first worked with Evan.

The next horse she pulled out to work was Valiant.

Both boys did excellent. When she was done working with them each was taken on a walk over to Joan's house and back, just so they would realize they still need to mind when going new places. Of course we used the golf cart for this exercise. We love watching them relax as they amble along with us.
Today is weaning day for Drifter, Galena's colt and Zephyr, Star's colt.  Karin and I took the truck and trailer to Middle Grove, loaded up the two mares, the foals followed them into the trailer and we slipped the mares out the side door then took the foals home.  They were put in the round pen with a filled water tank, a second tank that is filled with hay, and two grain buckets.  Karin worked with both boys and by the time she was done both were leading pretty well, both stood tied and both stood for fly spray.  Galena's colt is quite a bit bigger than Star's colt but both are really nice.
Galena's colt has the small star and check out his feather in the picture below.
They are still calling tonight but not terrible. I'm so glad they have each other as company. Dr. Hoerr arrived around 7:15 pm for ultrasounds, health certificates and to check poor Sheena's legs.  The boys were done first, then we had him look at Sheena. Her back leg is healing very well and we are now ready to just treat that with wonder dust and wrapping. The front leg wasn't so good. The joint is infected which is terribly painful for her. Dr. Hoerr sedated her, then blocked the nerve and flushed out the joint with antibiotics. She was given both Exceed (a strong long lasting antibiotic) and 35 cc's of Gentamiacin. We have orders to scrub the wound each day with iodine, then wrap it with vet wrap. He is coming again on Monday to flush out the joint again. Hopefully within a week we will know if her joint will heal. Once Sheena was done we had Oksana sonagrammed again. She was confirmed in foal in July due June 21st, 2019 but each time a stallion walks by she acts like she is in season. We were glad to see that she is still pregnant. It is probably the pregnancy hormones making her act like that. She will not accept a stallion but likes to tease them.  Tatiana was next and she was confirmed in foal.
She is due Aug 15th, 2019. Last we had Tory sonagrammed and she too was confirmed in foal and also due Aug 15th, 2019.
Both of these mares were covered only 1 time on Sept 5th, Tatiana by Valiant and Tory by Evan. Getting her pregnant is only half the battle. The real test will come in around 11 months and 11 days. Hopefully we will get a vibrant healthy foal out of Tory in 2019.  It was so heartbreaking to lose her first one born too early.
Rachel is hosting Bible Study tonight at her place for the young group. Joan has airbnb guests at her place so she and her younger kids are staying at mom's tonight, Mike and Diane are hosting birthday parties at their place tonight with all their kids and grandkids, and we have guests at the apartment so the neighborhood is full tonight.
