Snapping Turtle

On the walk today we came upon a big fat female snapping turtle in the process of laying her eggs.
This one had a big fat leech sucking away on her back. The last thing we need is for her to make her way into the lake with leeches attached. Soon those leeches have more leeches and then who is going to want to swim.
We don't want snapping turtles in the lake or anywhere around the lake. They kill ducklings, fish and have been known to snap at swimmers. Spark's son-in-law humanly took care of this one for us.
Once she was dead, she was moved off the hole she worked so hard digging to see she had just finished laying her eggs.
Those eggs cannot be left to hatch and had to be destroyed. Raven was put to work today teasing. He is so polite the mares are brought over to him and he doesn't try to climb over the fence if she is not willing. The boys don't make good teaser stallions, they are just too young and full of hormones. They try to climb over the fence if the mare is brought up to them even if she is not in season. Cor Arianna was brought first, she very politely said "no" and was put back in her paddock. Airiah was taken over next but not too close, on Wednesday she was being teased and let fly with a mule kick that not just hit the gate, this kick picked the gate completely up off the hinges slamming it into the ground. Today was another no but not as dramatic. Today is my best friends birthday. We have been friends for 55 years, man are we getting old.

  2. Snapping Turtles are actually very docile in the water and DO NOT attack swimmers. The reason they snap on land is because their plastron (bottom shell) is too small and they are unable to go inside their shell for protection. On land they are unable to hide or run away from danger and thus they snap. In the water they simply swim away from danger. I'm unsure what state you are from but in many states Snapping Turtles are now becoming a protected species because of recent population declines. Also, snapping turtles are not increasing your number of leaches in your pond. They actually have little to no influence on the number of leaches. In the future please contact your local nature centers or other humane organizations in your area. Sometimes they will assist in the transport to a new pond or hatch the eggs and release them elsewhere. There are ALWAYS better options than this! Please let me know if you have any further questions. I hate to see this occur.
