Autumn

Autumn is testing right at 250 this morning so we will plan on testing her again tonight and if she has progressed will spend the night. After the walk, the 60 square bales were moved into the back stall, the boys grained and we were just starting on cleaning stalls when Mike called that one of the newborn foals needed attention. After looking her over the vet was called, he found an infection in her umbilical cord. Normally this would just be treated with antibiotics but after Dr. Hoerr sonagramed her umbilicus he found a pocket of pus which means he should take the umbilical cord completely out. Dr. Hoerr and Dr. Pallen will come tomorrow for this procedure. First we had to build them a surgical table which Ralph and Steven helped construct. Ralph and Steven also helped today and have offered to help tomorrow with the surgery, thank goodness! We used a big water tank put it on a 4 inch pedestal and screwed a piece of plywood on top of the water tank as a base. Next we will put an old comforter, then the old feather bed and finally another comforter. Dr. Hoerr will finish it with a sterile drape. All of this was built in the office area, it is cooler and is a clean working space. I'm not sure how Mark is going to react when we tell him we are moving horses into the office. Hope the place doesn't get too bloody!
Autumn was given a bath to hopefully prepare her for the birth of her foal then moved into a stall. Jenis was moved into the cabin field as we don't want to leave her by herself.
Two more colts by Raven were born last week but we just heard about it today. That means the last 4 were colts, here I was worried about the filly colt ratio.
I'm heading to bed to catch a hopefully long nap before spending the night.
