Heartbreak

Roxanne delivered a still born filly this morning. This is what I was greeted with at 6:00 am.
The filly never took a breath. Roxanne was so upset when I moved the filly out of the paddock. It is cold this morning so instead of burying the placenta and sack I posted a notice on a couple Facebook groups to see if anyone had an orphan foal that needed a mother. The foal would need to be brought here this morning for it to work then once they were bonded I would have let Roxanne go to the foal's owner's farm. This would have been best for Roxanne and best for an orphan foal and there were two options but neither worked out. I buried the filly and now at 3:00 pm Mark is heading out to bury the placenta and sack.  Roxanne was put in the big field and has stopped calling.
The other hard thing that happened actually happened yesterday at 4:00 pm. Uncle Peter passed away. With all that is happening with this virus they are not going to be able to hold a funeral but will have that later.  Aunt Jinny wants the memorials to go to Berean Prison Ministry. Aunt Jinny is my mom's older sister. She and Uncle Peter have 5 children, Barbara who is married to Tony, Becky who is married to Mark, Peter who is married to Evelyn, Philip who is married to Sharon and Janet who is married to Floyd. They were the cousins we couldn't wait to go on vacation with each year. My heart goes out to all of them. It is really hard to lose a dad.
Karin came this morning to work horses and pulled Tori out first.

She was working with Galena when I got back from teasing mares. Galena was very low key and relaxed. I asked Karin if she had asked Galena to rear and she had not but said she would if I wanted pictures.  Check these out, they are in order from the time Karin asked her to go up until she came back down, all of the same rear:

She is just so balanced and stays up quite a while. When she came down Karin went right over and gave her a treat and praised her with lots of wonderful scratches.  Galena LOVES scratches almost as much as she loves her treats. I think that is why she is learning so quickly to go up when asked.
As soon as she was put away we brought out Irish and got her covered with Valiant.  Karin left to go on a trail ride with Hannah but I had work to do in the house. Lily, Zalena and Irish were left loose in the field for grazing. Lily is still not ready for another mare to be too close to her precious baby and was off by herself.
Zalena and Irish were more than happy to graze together.
Below they are heading up to get a drink at a trot.
Zalena was left in the field but because Irish is in season she had to be put back in a paddock.
My next job was to let Lola, Soul and their fillies out into the pond pasture. They were thrilled to be out and took off at a gallop across the dam.
A couple of hours later Lola came back over and sure enough she is in season. She will be covered tomorrow as Valiant was used today on Irish.
They were called in with grain. It is so cute how the two fillies share grain out of 1 bucket. I have 4 buckets with grain in them but they always end up sharing.
Lola's filly is sticking her head out below to see if I had any more grain.
Mark is back to mowing this afternoon. That is almost a full time job around here this time of year.
