Roxanne Surprises Us

I had quite a shock this morning on my way out to feed the horses. Roxanne had too many legs on the ground.  There was an adorable brand new colt standing next to her.  Now for the record last night I spent some time looking at Roxanne and thought, "well maybe she isn't pregnant after all!" She just wasn't very big and her udder, although kind of swollen had gone down from the day before.   I called Diane and asked her to send help then grabbed a lead rope to start moving them into a stall.  Mike arrived within a few minutes. The colt followed pretty well until we got in the barn then went the wrong way and panicked.  He is small enough that Mike just picked him up and brought him into the stall with Roxanne.  Below are a few pictures of him. He is 2 weeks early, a little small but healthy and nursing well.
He is a little muddy from being born outside. Thankfully she chose a relatively dry area to give birth.  He will be cleaned off later after he has rested from the big move from the paddock to the stall.

His cord was iodined, hay, grain and water were given to Roxanne and I left for the walk.  This colt is by Evan and he will have the mega hair, nice short back and he will be pitch black.  This is a bonus colt for us as I thought Roxanne lost the pregnancy over the winter and actually brought her in to breed to Evan.  She just didn't look big enough to be carrying such a beautiful colt. I am very thankful for a healthy colt AND no loss of sleep.
